Another weekend, another golf tournament. This week River Crossing is up for the Junior Tour, Matt has played the front 9 here many times during his junior career and only needed to gather information for the back side. He put together his yardage books and reviewed. Day of the tournament the wind was up (15-30 mph), thus requiring a steady swing and a ability to concentrate over and above a normal round. High winds will play havoc with your golf game under good circumstances, under bad, things get ugly real fast. Matt and I discussed before the round and were in agreement.
He started on hole #2 and made birdie to start the day, then made bogey on #3 with a silly driving mistake. Made it through #6 at 1 over par, with a good round going. He then made a string of mistakes that he could not recover from. It all stemmed from his ability to concentrate and not use the tournament as a social occasion. He was very busy interacting with his playing partners and not concentrating on his game. He went downhill very quickly and finished the day with a 89. His worst tournament round in years. Consequently this was still good enough to garner 5th place, but no where near what is expected from him.
