Matt is back playing in another STPGA Junior Tour event, today at Riverhill County Club in Kerrville about 1 hour from home. This is his 3rd event on this tour where we have had mixed results in the past. The tour is a 11-12 year old tour where size does matter. We are now at the age of the some of the boys reaching puberty and starting to grow like weeds. I think I saw height variations of over 1 foot from smallest to largest 11-12 year old. Matt is definitely on the smaller side of the scale for now, thus emphasizing our need to be better ball strikers, better short games and make better decisions than the others.
We have been emphasizing the need for Matt to buckle down and concentrate harder and tighten up his focus over the 5 hour rounds. He has been able to show more consistent focus and thus play at a higher level. Today we saw a side that we have been hoping to see from him. Not that he made every decision a good one or that every swing was perfect. But the fact that there was careful consideration on what types of shots to hit, where to aim and what clubs to play. Mistakes were made and bad shots hit, but he recovered fairly well from his mistakes and I think that I only saw one time that he let his emotions carry from 1 shot to the next.
Overall he met our goals for this season in his round today, by breaking 80 and not making any doubles. He shot 78 with 1 birdie (on the first hole) and gave himself looks at several more throughout the round. He tied his buddy Shiv Parmar (who is also 10) for 3rd place. Looks like the young guns are giving fair warning of their arrival.
