Matthew playing in the 2015 US Kids Holiday Classic, Day #2, held at PGA National, in West Palm Beach, Florida. Yesterday he finished with a 8 over par 44, about 6-7 strokes over his average. We chalked it up to being nervous in a big tournament. We spoke about it candidly over lunch and then invited his buddy Shiv over to the hotel for swimming and general mayhem. We headed back to the practice green about 4pm to get some work in and keep our focus on golf. Everything good.
Woke up early, 5:30 due to his even earlier tee time, based on the first day finish. Headed to putting green and then to range. Was a bit smoother than yesterday, but there was still some gawking at the sights and people. Headed to first tee, where he was busy awaiting his brother to come and watch him. Snapped him back into focus and we were underway. He pared the first hole and again on the second stumbled and took time to recover. He fell much faster this time, at some point hole #4 he blamed his caddie for a process mistake on his part and got angry again. I left him to his own devices for the next few holes, where it didnt get any better.
Remembering back now that I am writing this, 10 days after the tournament, we had these same issues as he started to play local tournaments on a regular basis over a year ago. At the local level he has gotten much better and more composed. We shall see what the future holds.
He finished the 2nd day with the same score as the first 8 over par 44, with nothing wrong with his swing or putting, that’s not saying he did all the swings correctly but on the range prior to the round there was nothing wrong. He finished 28th overall in his 2nd regional tournament.
